W. R. Martin was born in 1894 in the town of Llanerch, Monmouthshire, Wales. He was educated at the University College of Wales in Aberystwyth, and served as a major in the British Army during World War I
After World War I he taught at the University College of Wales and the University of Cambridge. He was awarded a D.Sc. from the University of London in 1936 and a D.Litt from the University of Wales in 1963.
In 1952 he was awarded a D.H.Sc., and in 1955 a D.Sc., by the University of East Anglia, Norwich. He died on April 8, 1967, two days after his seventy-fifth birthday.
